Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

Like, the obvious one is of course Harry Potter, because, obviously. I'm sure I've used that before though? But I don't know what else I should choose, so maybe I'll just talk about it some more. I think I haven't talked about this part before: English.

I read the first three books in one go when they'd all been translated into Norwegian (I think it might have been around the time the translation of Prisoner of Azkaban came out), and then had to wait for absolute aaages for Goblet of Fire (like half a year, but when you're 11 that's ages). And not only that - I had to wait further half a year for the Norwegian translation of it, which was torture. I remember I actually tried to read my half-sister's copy of the English version, but I was only 12 at the time, and with such a big book the challenge was a bit too much. But THEN when Order of the Phoenix came out, it was the summer when I was 14 and then I was determined - I would read it in English when it was released. And so I worked my way diligently through it, through Rowling's penchant for using weird words (I particularly remember 'protuberant') and I succeeded! I reread it in Norwegain when the translation came out, but it was the last book I did that with.

And so it opened a completely new world for me. If I could read an 800 page book in English, I could read anything! I've loved reading in English ever since, and I love the richness of the language. Maybe that's why I ended up studying English now?

I'll have to do Day 12 when I finish a thing I'm working on now *g*

Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I'll set myself a fannish goal for this one - to be more active. To hang around more here, at least a couple of times a week, to draw more and.. stuff? I'll try to participate in a handful of fests (I think maaaybe Big Bang? If I can convince myself that some writer would like to have their fic illustrated by me XD). I won't be too ambitious, and rather pleasantly surprise myself than fail.

So, that's it for today folks :D

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

The teachers were of course forbidden from mentioning the interview by Educational Decree Number Twenty-six, but they found ways to express their feelings about it all the same. Professor Sprout awarded Gryffindor twenty points when Harry passed her a watering can; a beaming Professor Flitwick pressed a box of squeaking sugar mice on him at the end of Charms, said, 'Shh!' and hurried away; and Professor Trelawney broke into hysterical sobs during Divination and announced to the startled class, and a very disapproving Umbridge, that Harry was not going to suffer an early death after all, but would live to a ripe old age, become Minister for Magic and have twelve children.
From Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Idk, I just really love this part. It's such a dark book in so many ways, with all of Harry's issues - everything he's going through, so this just felt like a little island of light and happiness and it made me smile.

Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Oh, I don't know!! I haven't created that much the last year......

Okay, so I'll go for these:

This one of Harry I made at the end of last year. I just really like how it turned out.

This Ginny/Luna piece I made last summer, because Linny, also pride and London and I like the mood of it.

And lastly this James/Sirius piece I made for last year's kinkfest. (I also just realised I'd never replied to the comments on it #fail I'll have to do that.)

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most.

Oh, there are many things I really love, but maybe one of the things that resonates emotionally with me the most is a character's realisation/struggle/acceptance with their sexuality, their discovery of what that means and how good it feels to find out who they are, and coming out scenarios. When those are done in good ways, there's hardly anything that tugs on my heartstrings as much as that, and I really love when authors explore that. Especially subverting or challenging norms and figuring out who they are on their own terms.

Another day, another batch of Snowflakes :D

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

Oh gosh, what would I like?

- Some plotty and deep diving femmeslash!! Preferably Ginny/Luna or Parvati/Lavender, but everything goes.

- Other femmeslashy things

- As always fic/ficlet for my art <3

- Recs for something good that you'd think I'd like? Something edgy and subversive maybe? Or political?

- For you to tell me what artist/song/music you associate with drarry :)

Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

I think I'll skip this one, because I've been so absent lately that I don't really know what's up :(:(

Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

Did it!

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I really like this challenge, and found it a fun way to start the year the previous times I've participated. It's a fun way to both interact and to reflect on fandom and my participation in it. I've also had a bit of an absence from fandom, so I'm sort of hoping it might kickstart my being more active again? Like, I know I've said this many times, so don't trust me *hangs head in shame*

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

Ohh there are many many things here. I've been lucky enough to meet fandom people a few times, both one on one and in bigger groups as part of meetups, and those are some of my favourite experiences that I've had. It's just so nice to meet someone you already know so much about you, and who knows about a part of my life I don't really share that much, so it seems so relaxing and natural from the get go <3

Also, I just have to mention this too since the challenge mentioned lovely comments, the comment [personal profile] birdsofshore left me after I drew Draco for her wonderful fic that she wrote me for erised two years ago. I was just so thrilled to be able to do something in return and then to get such lovely comments back from it. As if the fic wasn't enough of a reward as it was <3<3

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

I've read wayyy too little fic recently, having been swamped in school reading, so I'll rec a few lovely art pieces:

This absolutely hilarious picture by the eminent [personal profile] 8c, featuring the pairing.... Ron/Cormac? Didn't see that one coming :D

This awesome and chill 90s Ginny by brokenphalange.

And this absolutely heartbreaking picture of little Harry in the cupboard under the stairs by rijsamurai.

Whooo I did it! Only five more to catch up on (six by tomorrow). Easy peasy :D

Also massively wondering whether or not I should sign up for Big Bang. It's such a cool challenge, but also a bit intimidating D:
anemonen: (Default)
Eee, [personal profile] seraphina_snape wrote me a Ginny/Luna ficlet based on my art as a response to my Snowflake Challenge wishlist!! I can't believe ♥_♥

Title: Six Hundred and Forty-Three Steps
Author: [personal profile] seraphina_snape
Pairing: Ginny/Luna
Rating: Teen and up
Words: 983
Summary: Luna visits Ginny on a summer day.

My thoughts: This is such a sweet little fic! Luna is being perfectly Luna, and the little glimpse of the start of their relationship is so lovely. An atmospheric and beautiful ficlet <3

Day 06

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

- I always dream that someone will be inspired by my art to write something. So first wish - fic for my art.

- Ginny/Luna fic!

- I'm a very default icon kind of gal, but maybe it would be fun to have some for special occasions? Not character icons, but reaction icons sort of? Or funny ones?

Day 5

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Soo, my reading lately has mostly consisted of Erised and some original mm novels, so I'm gonna rec my own gift as well as some of my other favourites from the fest and some arts from Tumblr. I'm still FAR from finished reading Erised, though, so there might be some amazing ones I've yet to read to. Also so much amazingness in everything there in general?

I'll just put in a general rec of all things Erised, art and fic. Because that fest is always so good. So so good.

Title: Into My Heart
Author: Anonymous
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco (dur) with a side of Ron/Hermione
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~19,000
Warnings: None
Content/Enticements: friends with benefits, UST
Summary: No strings…easy. Right? Unless you're Draco Malfoy and you're having sex with Harry Potter.

My thoughts: This was my gift \o/ It's a friends with benefits story, which is one of my favourite tropes. There's such an explosive chemistry between Harry and Draco, and so much pining from Draco. Some great side characters too, in their friends. Loved their friendships.

-----

Title: Bound To You
Author: Anonymous
Pairing(s): Draco/Harry
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~28,000
Warnings: None
Content/Enticements: Accidental Bonding, Cursed Bonding, Curse Breaker!Draco, Cartographer!Harry, Unusual Careers, Lots of sass, Mild angst, Pining, Slow burn.
Summary: Hag magic is capricious and unruly, and Harry and Draco are bound to stay by each other’s side until they can solve the riddle. In between long car trips, misty rain, and midnight star charts, they begin to understand each other.

My thoughts: Wow this story has such a cool premise, and it explores so many interesting things wrt magic and careers. Harry and Draco is bonded to a curse, and the way the curse works is so different and creepy and interesting and the author does such a great job in exploring Harry and Draco's developing relationship through it. So much cleverness in this story.

-----

Title: The Loathly Worm
Author: Anonymous
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~12,000
Warnings: See Erised post
Content/Enticements: Secret identities, evil ghosts, and a Loathly Worm. Oh, and the power of True Love!
Summary: When Draco Malfoy is forced to go undercover among the remaining Death Eaters in the aftermath of the war, the last person he expects to find there is Harry Potter.

My thoughts: Another very cool premise, with some really interesting takes on magic. And the story is told in such a different and interesting way too, sort of with flashbacks after the fact. Harry and Draco are both undercover in a Death Eater camp after the war, and are drawn to each other even not knowing who the other is at first. The story is intriguing and suspenseful and I love all the interesting details and their developing relationship.

-----

Title: A Ghost in the Garden
Author: Anonymous
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~27,000
Warnings: See Erised post
Content/Enticements: Aurors, casefic, partners, pining, awkward bed sharing, sexual tension, snark, society shenanigans, dragons
Summary: That night Draco dreams, and he is the ghost in his garden. He is both silvered figment and his own solid and flesh face pressing against the window, watching. Spinning and spun, haunting and haunted. Turned and turning, an open mouth with no sound.
Harry and Draco are thrown together on an investigation into a sinister political movement.

My thoughts: This fic is so beautifully written, with this sort of permeating melancholy that I really love. It explores the politics of the Magical world, which is something I find really cool, as well as being a great auror mystery. So many good characterisation and the character arc is beautiful. Wonderful story.

---

Okay, over to some beautiful Tumblr arts:

This drawing by dasstark might be one of my favourite portraits ever of Ginny. She looks so fierce and beautiful and cool and her hair is so stunning. I might be in love.

This incredibly beautiful picture of the Marauders by upthehillart. The whole vibe of the picture is so great, with the warmth of the Gryffindor commonroom and the light from the fireplace. Plus, Sirius is stunning, which I guess is as it should be.

Also this stunning little comic by [personal profile] 8c of Ginny and Luna is too adorable for words. *sighs happily*

---

Also, in the end, does anyone fancy some One Direction fics? Because in this rec post I go on about all my favourites, and let's face it, I won't miss an opportunity to flail about them ;)

Haha always difficult this one. I'm always more happy with my recent work than the older ones, so these are all fairly new.

The first one I posted very recently, this one (tumblr link) of Harry and Draco. It's slightly NSFW, but non-explicit.

Also quite happy with the drawing I made for the tropes fest this year. My trope was time travel (Tumblr link).

Lastly, I made a few drawings for the bookseries 'All for the game' by Nora Sakavic. The one I'm happiest with is probably this one of Andrew.

-----

Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I can't say anything other than Harry Potter here. Even though I entered fandom many years after I first read the books, they have influenced my life greatly both now and then. For one thing, it was the books that really opened my eyes to the fantasy genre. Another thing, it probably contributed a great deal to getting me to read books in English. After having to wait several months for the translation of Goblet of Fire, there was no way I could go through the same with The Order of the Phoenix. So I fumbled my way through it at age 14, and haven't looked back since. And then finally, it made me discover fandom and meet so many people that I love so dearly and I can't imagine my life without it.

-----

Day 03

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The biggest one here is a real life one, that I won't put in the details of here in a public post, but I'm going to make some big changes in my life, career wise, and I really look forward to that. Other than that I want to keep playing Rugby that I just started with, and get the hang of that. Fandom wise I want to be better at being consistently active, as well as further develop my drawing abilities.

Hmm, not sure exactly what they mean here. I draw, although I'm not sure I would call that a contribution as much as me just doing something I enjoy immensely, and taking advantage of all of you for inspiration :)
I also read and comment and flail and am in general in a constant state of awe of the amount of talent found here.

Day 13:

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, how am I supposed to do this? I wish I could make one super long post and just mention everyone I know. Choosing one is really quite impossible.
But I'm going to go for [livejournal.com profile] firethesound. I first found her writing through a rec for Matchmaker, Matchmaker back in my lurking days and was instantly blown away. Her writing was one of the things that made me realise that LJ was the place to be, and she was one of the first people I added here. Just everything she writes has such an astounding high quality, and I'm always so exited when I see she's posted a new story.

----

And also a rec

Title: Over (Never Done With)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat
Pairing, characters: James Sirius Potter/Scorpius Malfoy; Albus Severus Potter
Rating: NC-17
Wordcount: ~4,000
Summary: Scorpius knows he's being played. But this time, he's not exactly sure what James' game is.
Warnings: Rimming, anal fingering, light D/s, some humiliation, and boys talking dirty all over the place.

My thoughts: [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat is awesome and made me this one for my Snowflake wishlist, and it's SO GOOD. It's told from Scorpius' pov, and I love how it's told. James is being all confident and Scorpius can't resist him, and there's pining and so much hotness and also so much emotion. Such a great fic. Warmly recommended, even if you're not into this pairing. This story will get you into it!

Day 10

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you.

First of all I read in a new fandom: the Hobbit. I read [livejournal.com profile] gracerene's fic Where Garden's Grow. I'm glad I tried it out, because the fic is fabulous and so hot. So if you're curious, I very much recommend it :)

Secondly, and I wasn't really going to do something else, I tried drawing Rae Morris, because I'm a bit obsessed with her song Under the Shadows. Plus she's so beautiful and I'm wildly jealous of her hair. It was also an attempt to try and draw likenesses, because I didn't use to be able to do that, and I really want to master it.

Day 11

In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources.

Hmm, this is tricky. I usually find creative resources via Tumblr or google searches. From my slash perspective, pictures of beautiful men is always an inspiration and a good source for references. I've been using these two blogs a bit. Especially for my portrait series. Oh, and also these wonderful pose books that [livejournal.com profile] chibitoaster shared has been very helpful.

As for more general fannish goodness, [livejournal.com profile] capitu's rec journal, [livejournal.com profile] my_drarry_recs, is so, so great, of course! Also, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene's journal, where there are recs for both HP and other fandoms. :D

In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh there have been so many surprises for me in fandom. First of all, that it was a thing. I didn't even know that two years ago, before I stumbled across it rather randomly. Secondly that slash was a thing, which I also had no idea about, nor the fact that I would fall so head over heels in love with the concept. Thirdly, that I would meet so many incredible people through fandom. Tbh, earlier I've always been a bit sceptical to meeting people online, because you never know if they are who they say they are, you know? But this incredible community has so many wonderful people and it's hard to imagine that I didn't know any of you a year ago. Man, I'm so grateful I do now. Also the fact that everyone was so welcoming and accepting towards me as an outsider. When I lurked it seemed like everyone knew each other so well and I didn't know if I would be able to be a part of it all like that, but here I am. Thank you everyone for being my friends and welcoming me. I appreciate all of you so much <3

Oh, this is a bit difficult. I don't have a very conscious relationship with my creative process. I just sometimes feel like drawing and sometimes don't. Although I often get inspired by pictures -- Tumblr is a great source for me there. When I draw for prompts I usually pick ones where I get an instant picture in my hear when I read it, then I just go for it. As for motivation, I get very motivated by being part of fandom; seeing other people create and also by getting feedback. If I get a block I find the best way to get rid of it is to use prompts from fests or comms or asking friends. But sometimes the only thing that works it to wait until the block dissappears by itself.
