Lovely [livejournal.com profile] dragonstag challenged me for this meme, and I really like this idea. Well done [livejournal.com profile] praevarus for coming up with it! And it fit really well today, because a fic was posted for the Salt and Pepper fest at [livejournal.com profile] hp_goldenage for one of my prompt, and it fit perfectly!

1. Find a fanwork that is different from what you normally read. This can be a new genre, pairing, kink, fandom, or even just an author you've never read anything by.
2. Enjoy and leave some comment love for the author/artist.
3. Report back in a post and challenge three other people to do the same.

One Last Time by currently anonymous (Gen Harry, Petunia, Dudley).
I was really happy with this prompt and so excited when I saw it had been claimed. I haven't really read many (no?) stories where Harry and the Dursleys meet again after the war, so I was curious about how it'd be. This is a scene where Harry sees Petunia for the first time since the war on her deathbed. It is a really poignant and bitter sweet little story. It's quite short, but the author has managed to put so many feels into it and it works so well.

Okay, so I'm also having a weird hang-up in One Direction fanfics that I can't seem to get rid of. There are just so many great fics there! So here's a (for me) new pairing from that fandom too.

My remedy for yesterday by faviconbrokendrums
It's a Harry/Niall future fic after the band is broken up. There are a lot of buried feelings and hearbreak and angst. It was really well done and quite sweet despite of all the angst. Probably not a new favourite pairing, but it worked quite well here.

One thing I've discovered by reading in another fandom is the amount of AU's that's there. It seems like 80% of the 1D fics out there are AUs. Like totally AUs, like Harry is the prince of England and Louis works for a group that handles pr crises (that one was quite good:P). I've never read in Merlin fandom, but from what I've seen it seems like AUs are a big thing there too. Why is that not more of a thing in Harry Potter? Not like Slytherin!Harry AUs, but Muggle AUs where they only keep their personalities and looks and relationships. From the top of my head I can only recall reading two, actually.

Okay, so tags:

Salutes! :D Thank you! This is going to be fun!

Yes, there's not enough Muggle AUs out there. I love them so much. I have a non Magical AU tag if you're ever in the mood for it.

But this, so true. People need to prompt more Muggle AU prompts. ;) Now that's a mission. :D

There are quite a few non-magical AUs in Remus/Sirius fandom. I've been thinking that it's got something to do with the rather limited canon material we have for the Marauders - there might be a limit to how many different versions of the same canon events you're interested in writing/drawing, and perhaps also reading. So non-magical AUs is a wonderful way of expanding the opportunities, and of course give them a happy ending ;)
But for Harry and Draco, who both survive, there are so many possibilites within the canon world that maybe people don't feel the same urge to go non-magical?

Yay :D

Yeah, I just got a bit curious since it seems to be such a big thing in other fandoms. Maybe it's that HP is such a big world with so many possibilities in the first place. I'll be sure to check out the tag, though :)

That is a very good point, with the Remus/Sirius fandom vs Drarry. And I suppose that maybe that can go for Drarry vs other fandoms as well, since the possibilities are quite endless if you go for EWE. It was just a bit of a surprise to see how common it is in other fandoms compared to HP.

First off, huge thanks for mentioning the fest! :D

Regarding non-magic AUs, as someone who writes them, I can tell you that a lot of people don't like them, feeling that taking away their magic takes away from the essence of the character. Personally I don't agree since there *is* a whole Muggle world for them to play in. Non-magic is sort of built in to the wizarding world in that sense.

I think HP tends to stick closer to canon--maybe book people are just different than TV or movie or RPF fandoms. So yes, I've read really out there AU scenarios but most seem to be grounded in something we're familiar with.

Ohh, I'm pretty sure I've read that back in my lurking days. Loved it! Can't remember how I found it, though. Thanks for reminding me of it ♥

Of course! This fest is such a different and great idea.

Yeah, I don't agree that the magic is what makes the HP characters, and I think it'd be interesting to see their personalities in different settings. Although, this was more about curiosity than a plea for more, but I'm definitely curious to read some as well.

It makes sense somehow that RPF prefers AUs. I guess it seems a bit less invasive to use their personas as inspiration for something more like original fics rather than speculate about their actual lives. Idk. HP does have a lot of potential withing the boundaries of canon as well, so maybe the writers don't get that need to expand. It's interesting, though :) Thanks for your answer!

I have only seen about half the first season, so I don't know how it ends. Curious now, though :) I've mostly enjoyed the few AUs I've read, but I feel like maybe it's harder to make a really good non-magical au? Since the characters need to be recognisable without the setting? Idk. I think I'll have to check out some. I mostly asked here out of curiosity of the differences. It's kind of funny that a lot of other fandoms seem to have Hogwarts AUs though :P

I'm 9800 words in, it's totally NOT non-magical-au :D

But it's all kinds of AU.

If I finish this story in time, I might pick an art prompt and do some Muggle-AU art :D
