I have a lot of love and fascination for language in general and different British accents in particular, and found this magnificent post on Tumblr about it today. Anyone of you have any particular headcanons there? I'd love to hear. Here's a magnificent excerpt from the post with Sirius accidentally revealing his OTT poshness:

All in all I very much recommend reading it in its entirety here. I was also rather fascinated by the part about Justin Finch-Fletchey and his fall from the elite at Eton to being a Muggleborn at Hogwarts and I wish someone would explore that so I could read!!

and I'm absolutely not taking credit for this, I just didn't have any other meta tags..

Omg when I read this post this morning I was DYING!!! It's a glorious piece of meta! The Voldemort bit got me, I was cracking up. I loved the Justin part, too, about not being able to tell his mates lol!!! And Sirius and James, omg, being posh, but James being like Hunter wellies farm posh so he can get away with it because he's never been to a cotillion. *dies* I also loved the speculation over local day schools and whether or not the Irish have their own school system. And gaaaah all the thoughts about where the founders come from, I've seen theories similar to that before pretty much surmising the same locations, but I've never really thought specifically about what that would mean about all of their accents. Irish Salazar!!!!

Hahaha same!!!!! And lol the Voldemort thing! (Except, weren't he raised in an orphanage in London? Or maybe that's never specified?) Oh well. I'd love Voldemort with a Mancunian accent or something lmao :D
And yes! I tend to forget that James and Sirius were posh little arseholes, and I find that very amusing. Especially Sirius slipping up in the midst of his teen rebellion and saying things like 'spiffing'!
Yeah I've read the theory about the different founders being from different parts of Britain, and I love that and it also sounds like such a JKR thing to do imho. I'd never thought farther than that, though! Irish Salazar indeed :D And Welsh Hufflepuff! I'm into this!!! (Have you watched 'Pride'? I so love the Welsh accents in that one.)

Yes, I was thinking about the orphanage, too. I wonder if the other kid's in the orphanage or the students at Hogwarts would influence his accent?

Ohh I haven't, I'll have to check it out!

All the different British accents fascinate me. I've watched countless YT vids and listened to British audiobooks. I can't get enough! I will say, though, that a Dumbledore who sounds like Hagrid would definitely give me the LOLs.

Absolutely! And I'm also fascinated by how much it's tied to class as well as place. We have an immense amount of dialects in Norwegian too, thanks to our crazy landscape, but they're more or less solely tied to geography. So I find all the aspects of accents in the UK incredibly interesting!

It was really interesting! But makes me feel like as an American writing HP fanfic, the amount that I will never be able to pull off, in terms of characters' voices, is enormous.

I do get the feeling that they're mainly talking about the films, though - which I think is a very fair point, because they all mostly speak in a very proper way there. Accents transfer less through writing after all. The only one JKR gave any sort of specific accent in the books is Hagrid, isn't it? So I don't think you need to worry! I'm definitely not an expert myself; hey I'm not even a native English speaker, but I do find it immensely interesting. And fun for headcanons :)
